FOLLOW (1) Damien vs. (16) Central

Frank Says: The host Spartans have lost only to three of the top four teams in California (Chino Hills twice, Mater Dei and Sierra Canyon). Unless Central can do a better job of getting to Damien’s jump shooters than almost anyone has done this season, it will be a short stint in the playoffs for the Grizzlies.

FOLLOW (8) Long Beach Poly vs. (9) Fairfax

Frank Says: This game will pit the strong perimeter play of the visiting Lions and the exceptional posts in Zafir Williams, Myles Johnson and John Duff of the Jackrabbits. Two of SoCal’s best junior point guards, Jamal Hartwell of Fairfax and Darryl Polk of Poly, will likely match up a lot.

(5) Redondo Union vs. Ridgeview

Frank Says: The Wolf Pack won the Central Section’s Division II title Friday night (74-66 over Fresno San Joaquin Memorial) and might have been somewhat “under-seeded” at No. 12. The host Sea Hawks will need strong efforts from their exception guards to advance to the second round.

FOLLOW (4) Corona Centennial vs. (13) Narbonne

Frank Says: These are a couple of teams that have played exceptional competition (12 of the combined losses are to teams that were in the L.A. City or Southern Section Open playoffs). The host Huskies have a lot more size, led by 6-9 future UCLA Bruin Jalen Hill. Narbonne plays exceptional half-court defense.

College-Bound Seniors: Center Jalen Hill (UCLA) and injured guard Gio Nelson (UC Davis).

FOLLOW (3) Taft vs. (14) JSerra

Frank Says: The Toreadors got a very fortunate seed, considering that three teams in this division (Oak Park, Santa Margarita and Vista) beat them but got poorer seeds. But it is what it is and this game should produce a nice showdown between two exceptional junior posts in Joel Mensah of JSerra and Antwan January. The point guard of Taft junior Kihei Clark may give the hosts a slight edge.

FOLLOW (6) Santa Margarita vs. (11) Vista

Frank Says: The host Eagles have a huge size advantage in this one and usually have at least three players on the floor at the same time that are 6-7 or taller. But Vista’s execution and guard play is exceptional, with junior point guard Taurus Samuels leading the way for the team that beat Taft in the championship game of the Silver Division of the Classic at Damien on Dec. 30.

College-Bound Seniors: Forward Adrease Jackson (Dartmouth) and center Johnny Wang (Cal State Fullerton)

FOLLOW (7) Foothills Christian vs. (10) Oak Park

Frank Says: The records vs. Top 25 competition are a tad deceptive as Foothills played multiple exceptional teams from outside of Southern California. The host will be without its suspended (for two Ts in the SS Open semifinal lost to St. Augustine) coach, Brad Leaf, for this one. Foothills Christian will have a difficult task in trying to handle one of the most skilled posts in the state, 6-8 junior Riley Battin.
